In a highly competitive first half, both teams cancelled each other out for long periods while maintaining an intense tempo. It ultimately took until the 19th minute for the game to come alive. Following an important recovery by Sofie Svava, Lily Yohannes played a perfectly weighted pass into space for Jule Brand. The Lyon forward then produced a moment of real quality, beating her direct opponent before calmly slotting home to open the scoring (19’, 0-1).
Despite the setback, Arsenal W.F.C. responded quickly. In the 39th minute, the English side created their most dangerous opportunity of the first half, with a dangerous cross met by a header that narrowly missed the Lyon goal. It was a tightly contested first half in which the Lyonnes made the difference through their efficiency while remaining alert to the opposition’s attacks.
After the break, the match quickly swung in Arsenal’s favour during a much more eventful second half. In the 50th minute, the English side believed they had won a penalty, only for the referee to overturn the decision after a VAR review, a first major turning point in a tense second period. A few minutes later, in the 54th minute, Christiane Endler produced an exceptional save from an English shot to keep the Lyonnes in the game.
However, the mounting pressure eventually paid off. In the 58th minute, Arsenal equalised from a free kick, converting their dominance into a goal (58’, 1-1). The Lyonnes tried to respond, and Kadidiatou Diani came agonisingly close to restoring Lyon’s lead in the 66th minute with a powerful strike that crashed against the crossbar.
Late in the match, Arsenal scored a second goal, ultimately sealing the outcome of the game (83’, 2-1). The Lyonnes therefore suffered defeat in this first leg and will now have to give everything in the return fixture.
