Summary
The day after the Champions League draw, OL Lyonnes traveled to Saint-Étienne for the Rhône derby. Jonatan Giráldez‘s squad made the short journey from the GOLTC by bus (70 km) to face Les Vertes. A week before their clash against Paris Saint-Germain, OL Lyonnes aimed for a strong start to the match, and they succeeded. They dominated the first half, creating several clear-cut chances throughout. Early in the game, Ada Hegerberg missed a golden opportunity. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, she hesitated and let the chance to open the scoring slip away (11′). Lindsey Heaps then struck the crossbar after connecting with a cross from Liana Joseph (25′). But it was she who ultimately delivered for the Red and Blue before the break, heading home a beautiful free kick from Selma Bacha (42′, 0-1). Lyon thus finished the first half with a narrow one-goal lead.
From the hour mark, Jonatan Giráldez made sweeping changes, bringing on Damaris Egurrola, Korbin Shrader, Vicki Becho, and Marie-Antoinette Katoto for Lily Yohannes, Lindsey Heaps, Liana Joseph, and Ada Hegerberg. This proved to be a wise move, as Lyon gradually gained the upper hand, both physically and technically. In the 73rd minute, Saint-Étienne almost pulled off a surprise by finding themselves in a two-on-two situation, but their attack came to nothing. A few minutes later, our players finally broke through. Jule Brand‘s shot was saved by the Saint-Étienne goalkeeper, but Marie-Antoinette Katoto, perfectly positioned, followed up the play and tapped the ball into the net (75′, 0-2). This first goal for her new club gave her an ideal start to her season and sealed the victory for Lyon.
This success allows the team to approach the upcoming challenges with confidence.
