In a particularly tight and intense final in Oslo, the opening minutes quickly set the tone between two sides determined to claim the European title. Barcelona first threatened in the 11th minute with a cross that was sent just wide, causing an early scare for the Lyon defense.
The Lyonnes responded immediately a few minutes later. From a perfectly delivered Selma Bacha free kick, Lindsey Heaps believed she had given Lyon the lead before eventually being ruled offside. It was an early warning that confirmed Lyon’s positive intentions in this final.
Very active in attack, Jule Brand brought energy to the Lyon game with several sharp runs forward. After an excellent individual breakthrough, the German combined beautifully with Melchie Dumornay in a superb one-two, but her effort drifted just wide of the post.
Despite several dangerous situations at both ends, the defenses held firm. Barcelona notably missed a huge counterattacking opportunity in the 35th minute, while Selma Bacha once again showcased the quality of her delivery just before halftime with an excellent free kick toward the near post.
After a hard-fought first half, both teams went into the break level at 0-0.
At the start of the second half, Barcelona gradually took control of the match and managed to make the difference with one of their first attacking moves. Breaking quickly on the counterattack, Ewa Pajor opened the scoring in the 55th minute, giving FC Barcelona the lead in this European final (55’, 1-0).
Despite several attempts to get back into the game, the Lyonnes suffered another blow in the 69th minute when Barcelona scored a second goal, strengthening the Spanish side’s advantage in the second half (69’, 0-2).
The Lyonnes never stopped believing. In the 75th minute, Tabitha Chawinga led a superb Lyon counterattack before finishing the move with a shot saved by the opposing goalkeeper, wasting a huge opportunity to revive the contest.
After a generally controlled and balanced first half, the Lyonnes ultimately cracked in the second period against Barcelona’s clinical finishing.
Barcelona definitively sealed the outcome of the final with a third goal in the 90th minute (90’, 3-0), before adding a fourth moments later in stoppage time (90+3’, 4-0).
OL Lyonnes therefore fell to a Catalan side that largely controlled the encounter, seeing their dream of reclaiming the European trophy slip away. The Lyonnes now turn their attention to next Friday at Groupama Stadium, with the objective of ending the season by winning a third trophy this season.
Our players continue with the French championship final on Friday, May 29 at Groupama Stadium (9 pm) against Paris FC. Tickets.
