From the opening whistle at the Stade Océane, Lyon’s intentions were clear: to dominate possession and stifle Le Havre AC from the outset. While Le Havre initially tried to withstand Lyon’s high press, the dam quickly crumbled under the technical quality of our Lyon players.
It took only fifteen minutes for Lyon’s dominance to pay off. Very active down her flank, Sofie Svava delivered a perfect cross from the left wing. At the far post, Kadidiatou Diani, unmarked, perfectly timed her header to open the scoring (16′, 0-1). Far from being content with this goal, our Lyon players maintained the pressure. Shortly after the half-hour mark, the duo of Sofie Svava and Wendie Renard almost scored from a set piece. From a pinpoint corner by the Danish full-back, our captain rose highest, but her powerful header crashed against the crossbar, miraculously saving Le Havre.
Just when Le Havre hoped to head into halftime trailing by a single goal, Lyon stepped up the pace one last time. Ashley Lawrence delivered a perfect cross into the box, at the penalty spot, for Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who pounced to meet the ball with a clinical glancing header, giving the opposing goalkeeper no chance (42′, 0-2).
Driven by fluid teamwork and formidable attacking efficiency, Lyon quickly extended their lead in the second half, delivering a controlled performance right up to the final whistle.
In the 52nd minute, Vicki Becho lit up the match with a moment of pure class. Perfectly positioned in the box, the Lyon striker attempted a sumptuous bicycle kick that nestled into the back of the net (52′, 0-3). Lyon continued their attacking masterclass and maintained the pressure. In the 57th minute, Ashley Lawrence once again distinguished herself on her flank, delivering a precise cross. Inès Benyahia perfectly intercepted the ball and met it with precision to score Lyon’s fourth goal (57′, 0-4). Lyon’s dominance was absolute. Four minutes later, Vicki Becho turned provider. She perfectly set up Kadidiatou Diani on the right wing. At full speed, the Lyon winger beat her marker before slotting an unstoppable shot across goal past the goalkeeper (61′, 0-5). In the 81st minute, Lyon further increased their lead. With a moment of brilliance, Lily Yohannes played Tabitha Chawinga through on the right flank. The Malawian striker then used her pace to leave Le Havre’s defense in her wake before finishing with an unstoppable shot across goal, sealing another Lyon goal (81′, 0-6).
In stoppage time, Lyon completed their attacking masterclass. Lindsey Heaps delivered a very good ball to Tabitha Chawinga, who showed opportunism in the box and beat the goalkeeper from close range, completing a successful attacking performance by the Lyon players (0-7, 90+1’).
Serious, efficient, and inspired in attack, our Lyon women delivered a polished performance, ideal for building confidence. Now, all eyes turn to the next European fixture. This Wednesday, OL Lyonnes will host Atlético de Madrid at Groupama Stadium. A prestigious match that the players approach with ambition and determination, ready to take on this new challenge towards direct qualification for the knockout stages.
