With three matches in the space of a month (French Cup, LFFP Cup and the Arkema Première Ligue), Corinne Diacre had clearly done her homework ahead of the clash against Lyon. Marseille immediately brought plenty of physical intensity in an attempt to disrupt Lyon’s rhythm. Tabitha Chawinga looked dangerous early on, but she failed to find a teammate.
Around the 20-minute mark, Marseille began creating chances of their own through well-executed counter-attacks, with the lively Sintia Cabezas at the heart of them. The Colombian forward, perfectly picked out by Melissa Herrera (22′), narrowly missed the ball. At the other end, Lyon also pushed forward. Lily Yohannes delivered an excellent cross for Sofie Svava (24′), but the Marseille goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to keep it out.
It eventually took another ten minutes for the breakthrough to arrive. A dangerous cross from Sofie Svava, combined with a misplaced clearance straight through the middle of the Marseille defence, allowed Korbin Shrader to fire Lyon in front (0-1, 34′)!
While Sintia Cabezas continued to cause problems, it was Tabitha Chawinga who doubled Lyon’s advantage in stoppage time (0-2, 45+1′). She reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box following another Sofie Svava cross, further strengthening her status as Lyon’s top scorer this season.
Tabitha Chawinga started the second half exactly the way she had ended the first. Korbin Shrader delivered a perfect pass to the unmarked Malawian striker inside the box, and she made no mistake in securing her brace (0-3, 51′).
Already on the scoresheet, Tabitha Chawinga then turned provider, setting up Melchie Dumornay for her seventh goal of the season (0-4, 55′). The two Lyon stars then brought Vicki Becho into the action, with the French winger finishing off a superb three-way passing move in style (0-5, 57′)!
Shortly afterwards, the referee awarded Marseille a penalty for a Lyon handball, allowing Margaux Le Mouël to pull one back from the spot (1-5, 59′). Marseille kept pushing forward, and Melissa Herrera’s cross ended up finding the back of the net in the 66th minute (2-5, 66′).
The Lyon goalkeeper was called into action again late on, notably producing a fine save to deny Ninon Blanchard. The tempo of the game seemed to have slowed before the ever-influential Sofie Svava delivered yet another dangerous cross, with Jule Brand on hand to finish at the far post (2-6, 83′).
Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Melchie Dumornay both had further chances at the end of the game but were unable to add to the scoreline.
