Lyon’s women’s team traveled to Montpellier for another Arkema Première Ligue match. They made a perfect start. In the 8th minute, Sofie Svava delivered a pinpoint corner to Lindsey Heaps, who unleashed a low shot from the edge of the box that nestled into the back of the net (8′, 0-1). An ideal start for Jonatan Giráldez’s players, who were determined to dictate the tempo.
A few minutes later, Inès Benyahia tried her luck with a superb shot aimed for the top corner, but the Montpellier goalkeeper made a magnificent save to prevent Lyon from doubling their lead. Lyon continued to press forward, with Lily Yohannes playing Tabitha Chawinga through the middle, but the Malawian’s shot crashed against the crossbar. Two minutes later, OL Lyon were rewarded once again. Sofie Svava missed her shot, but Inès Benyahia was there to pounce and score Lyon’s second goal (28′, 0-2).
Just before halftime, Jule Brand made a magnificent run down the wing before finding Elma Nelhage in the box. The Swede finished from close range, giving Lyon a comfortable lead going into the break (45+3′, 0-3).
Upon returning from the locker room, Lyon resumed play at the same pace. But Montpellier attempted to respond and managed to reduce the deficit in the 53rd minute thanks to Rouquet, who beat the Lyon defense with a well-placed shot (53′, 1-3). Despite this, our players maintained control of the game and continued to pose a threat. In the 78th minute, Vicki Becho came close to increasing the lead, but her attempt struck the post. Lyon finally extended their advantage in the 84th minute when Ada Hegerberg’s header was saved by the goalkeeper, but Melchie Dumornay was on hand to tap the ball into the net (84′, 1-4). In the dying moments of the match, the referee awarded a penalty to Lyon. Inès Benyahia missed her initial shot, but Ada Hegerberg, well-positioned, pounced to score the fifth goal of the evening and seal the victory (90+2’, 1-5).
Lyon leaves Montpellier with all three points and confirms its status as the undisputed league leader. A complete performance that demonstrates the confidence and determination of a group more focused than ever on its ambitions just days before hosting Wolfsburg.
