In this derby against AS Saint-Étienne, OL Lyonnes showed their intent from the opening whistle by taking control of possession. In the 6th minute, Kadidiatou Diani won the ball high up the pitch before threading a perfect pass through to Marie-Antoinette Katoto inside the box. The Lyon striker found herself one-on-one with the Saint-Étienne goalkeeper but was denied twice by crucial saves, keeping the game goalless despite a massive early chance.
Comfortable in possession and well organised defensively, the Lyonnes gradually tightened their grip on the match. By the half-hour mark, they had largely controlled the first half, creating a series of dangerous openings without managing to find the breakthrough.
Lyon’s pressure intensified in the 30th minute. From an accurate cross by Inès Benyahia, Marie-Antoinette Katoto rose highest in the box and powered a header towards goal, only to see the effort crash against the post, giving Saint-Étienne a lifeline once again.
But just before the break, Lyon finally got the reward. In the 45th minute, Inès Benyahia showcased her technical quality with a superbly taken free kick to open the scoring and send the Lyonnes into half-time with a fully deserved lead in the derby.
After the restart, OL Lyonnes wasted no time. Just a minute into the second half, Kadidiatou Diani burst down the flank before delivering a pinpoint cross to the back post. Sofie Svava timed her run perfectly and arrived to slot the ball home, making it 2-0 for Lyon. The Danish full-back also celebrated her first official goal in Lyon colours.
The Lyonnes kept up the intensity and extended their lead with another moment of top-quality attacking football. Melchie Dumornay produced a brilliant nutmeg to beat her direct opponent and open up space before finding Marie-Antoinette Katoto with a perfectly weighted pass. The striker kept her composure in front of goal and finished clinically to net Lyon’s third, capping off an attacking display full of precision and efficiency.
Deep into stoppage time, the Lyonnes earned one final opportunity to add to the scoreline. In the 90+3rd minute, Kadidiatou Diani won a penalty after her effort struck a defender’s hand inside the box. The referee immediately pointed to the spot, giving OL Lyonnes the chance to put the seal on a derby they had controlled from start to finish. The French striker scored the final goal of the game.
