In a prestigious European fixture, OL Lyonnes hosted Atlético de Madrid at the Groupama Stadium, aiming to end 2025 on a high note by securing direct qualification for the quarterfinals. Atlético had the first chance of the match when Lauren hit the post (4′). But this scare didn’t shake Lyonnes’ confidence, as they subsequently took control of the game.
In the 26th minute, Kadidiatou Diani was dangerous down the right flank and delivered a precise cross for Ada Hegerberg, whose header was comfortably saved by Lola Gallardo. Three minutes later, Melchie Dumornay tried her luck from the edge of the box, but her shot went just over the bar.
Lyon’s dominance was rewarded in the 31st minute. After excellent work by Kadidiatou Diani on the right, her cross was deflected into her own net by Vilde Bøe Risa, giving OL Lyonnes the opening goal (31′, 1-0). The turning point of the match came shortly after, in the 36th minute, when Luany was sent off for a petulant reaction towards Selma Bacha, leaving Atlético de Madrid with ten men.
After returning from the locker room, OL Lyonnes stepped up the pace again. In the 52nd minute, following a handball in the penalty area, Wendie Renard converted the penalty, doubling the lead (52′, 2-0). Moments later, Tarciane delivered a perfect cross for Kadidiatou Diani, who finished with precision (53′, 3-0).
The Lyonnes continued their dominance and definitively sealed the match in the 70th minute. Korbin Schrader surprised the Spanish goalkeeper with a magnificent long-range strike, capping off a controlled and convincing team performance (70′, 4-0).
Thanks to this victory against Atlético de Madrid, OL Lyonnes secured their direct qualification for the quarterfinals. The eight-time European champions thus maintain their status and finish the league phase in second place, behind Barcelona (with the same record of 5 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses).
Solid, disciplined, and efficient in key moments, Lyon’s women perfectly managed this high-stakes match, confirming their experience and mastery on the European stage. This victory rewards a complete team performance and allows OL Lyonnes to approach their final league match of the year against Fleury (this Saturday at 9 p.m.) with complete confidence.
