At the end of an intense and tactical match, there were numerous highlights on both sides. However, since neither team was able to break through, they parted ways with a tie (0-0).
The opening minutes were fiercely contested as both teams set a fast pace. Fifteen minutes into the game, Selma Bacha closed in on Wieke Kaptein and intercepted the cross with a tenacious tackle. A few minutes later, the Lyon players came close to opening the scoring. On a well-executed attacking transition, Melchie Dumornay delivered a through ball. Marie-Antoinette Katoto let the ball run on to Salma Paralluelo, whose shot was stopped by the opposing goalkeeper (20′). Following a beautiful give-and-go between the three forwards, Marie-Antoinette Katoto was caught by Kadeisha Buchanan (24′). Lyon capitalized on a good turnover to draw a foul from the opposing defense. Selma Bacha took the free kick with her left foot, but it sailed just over the crossbar (28′). Shortly before halftime, Mala Grohs kept the game in suspense with a fine save on a cross from ex-Lyonnes Ellie Carpenter (40′). Both teams headed into the locker rooms with the score tied at zero. In the first half, The Lyonesses had five shots on goal, compared to four for Sonia Bompastor’s players.
After the break, OL Lyonnes took control of the ball and upped the tempo. The first clear-cut chance of the second half came on the hour mark following a strong spell of play from Lyon. Another fine move involving Melchie Dumornay and Caroline Weir led to a cross for Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who was narrowly beaten to the ball by Lucy Bronze (59′). Melchie Dumornay drove forward with the ball at her feet and played a through ball to Salma Paralluelo. The Spanish striker shook off her marker and found the far corner of the net. However, the goal was ultimately disallowed for offside (71′). A few minutes later, Marta Huerta De Aza awarded a penalty for an alleged foul by Damaris Egurrola on Lauren James. However, the referee reversed her decision after consulting the VAR (74′). A final chance in stoppage time sent the stadium into a frenzy. Ada Hegerberg, perfectly set up by Lily Yohannes, met the cross with a header, but the opposing goalkeeper made a fine save to deny the Lyonnes player her 70th goal in the Women’s Champions League (90’). The two teams parted ways with a goalless draw at the end of a hard-fought but evenly matched game, with both sides creating chances.
« We knew we’d be up against a strong Chelsea side. We all had our moments during the match. We had chances that we didn’t manage to convert, but we’ve made a strong start to the season. So we mustn’t write it all off. The tactics we’ve been using since the start of the season are working well. We know the quality of our squad. It’s a source of pride and an honour for me to have worn the captain’s armband tonight; it was my first time in the Women’s Champions League and I hope it will happen again. »
« Tonight, it was a bit trickier in the final few metres. We didn’t manage to capitalise on our chances. That said, throughout the match, we kept that determination to win. Defensively, the team did a decent job. We’ve kept a clean sheet for the second match in a row, which is a positive. Our style of play has evolved significantly in recent years. These days, we’re more daring when it comes to keeping possession, which is a difficult approach to sustain over the long term. »
« I’m proud that we didn’t concede a goal in this match, against a strong attacking line-up. It’s a shame we didn’t manage to capitalise on the chances we had. It was, of course, very emotional to be back here; I was able to catch up with lots of people I’ve worked with before. It really was a great game of football tonight, despite the score. To perform well again just a few days after the big match we played against Arsenal is very positive. Indeed, I also hope that if we have to face Olympique Lyonnais again, it will be in the final. Finally, I think I’ve developed a lot as a coach. The experience I had at Olympique Lyonnais helped me grow a great deal. »
OL Lyonnes will host Toulouse at the Groupama Stadium on Saturday 3 October, as part of the “Grands Stades” initiative. The match will be all about wellbeing, with a host of activities to enjoy on the forecourt in the run-up to the game.
