Summary
The reigning French champions, the Lyonnes, face newly promoted Marseille in the opening match of the 2025-26 season. This will be the first time in OL’s history that they have competed in the top flight. The entire stadium was packed at Groupama Stadium! At the start of the match, while Lyon put pressure on the Marseille defense, thanks in particular to Liana Joseph’s excellent work on the right wing, they failed to capitalize. Ashley Lawrence (16′) missed her volley, for example. This was also due to a disciplined Marseille side who allowed little space in the early stages of the game. It wasn’t until the 31st minute that Selma Bacha’s excellent cross found Ada Hegerberg’s head (1-0). The Lyon legend thus symbolically scored the first goal of the season and of the new OL Lyonnes era!
Back on the pitch after the break, Lyon continued to press forward. Following her strong preseason, Liana Joseph (2-0, 57′) confirmed her form, scoring Lyon’s second goal, set up by Vicki Becho. A few minutes later (3-0, 62′), another young Lyon player under 20 years old made her mark. New Lyon signing Lily Yohannes (18 years old), instinctively pounced on a loose ball in the box and found the back of the net. Marseille finally pulled one back (3-1, 90+2′), with Tess Laplacette finding former Paris FC player Mathilde Bourdieu in stoppage time.

Lyon have no match next week (French Cup weekend). They will return to competition for the first derby of the season, in Saint-Étienne. And September will end on a high note with a rematch of the Arkema Première Ligue final at Groupama Stadium against PSG.
