After a match they dominated, OL Lyonnes secured a home win against Toulouse (5-0) and consolidated their position at the top of the Arkema Première Ligue ahead of the international break.
In this match, which was dedicated to wellbeing and prevention, the kick-off was taken by Marie-Aude Bayle and Muriel Jaby, representatives of the Etablissement Français du Sang. OL Lyonnes got off to a flying start, opening the scoring right from the outset through Inès Benyahia (1–0, 3′). For the third time this season, the number 10 found the back of the net, this time from a free-kick. Shortly before the half-hour mark, Ashley Lawrence played a through ball to Vicki Becho, who shook off her Toulouse marker and cut the ball back. Jule Brand was on hand to meet it and flicked the ball on with a backheel to Ada Hegerberg, who was positioned behind her. The Norwegian striker finished off a superb team move perfectly (2–0, 28’). The Violettes’ pushed forward quickly, but Christiane Endler cleared the danger with a magnificent save, sending the ball out for a corner (34’). The OL Lyonnes defence cleared the ball well from the Téfécé corner and played a long ball forward to Vicki Becho. She delivered a perfect pass to Tabitha Chawinga, who gave the opposing goalkeeper no chance (3–0, 35′). Last season’s top scorer in the French league scored her first goal of this season following a lightning-fast counter-attack.
In the second half, our Lyon side dictated the play and kept possession. The team pushed forward but came up against a better-organised defence, which prevented them from adding to their tally on numerous occasions. Yet another run down the right flank by Vicki Becho created danger in front of goal, but the Violettes’ defence held firm (62′). The deadlock was finally broken late in the match when Jule Brand won the ball high up the pitch and played a pass to Marie-Antoinette Katoto. The French striker, who had only just come on, beat her marker and laid the ball off to Liana Joseph, who finished the move with a curling shot (4–0, 76’). The young striker was making her second appearance since returning from injury and has already proved decisive for OL Lyonnes. Inès Benyahia, who had already scored in the first half and put in a very good performance, came very close to scoring a brace, but the opposition goalkeeper made a fine save (79′). Late in the game, Caroline Weir rounded off the match with a magnificent curling shot from outside the box (5–0, 84′). Our Lyonnes secured victory after a match they controlled from start to finish and have now gone three consecutive matches without conceding a goal.
« We made a lot of mistakes in this match; we weren’t very precise technically and we tried to push forward too quickly. We need to be a bit more patient in the way we make transitions, and sometimes take the time to find a better pass. As for the international break, we do indeed have a lot of players away on international duty; we’ll be working on individual training sessions as well as with players from the Academy. We’ll be facing Paris SG when we return from the break; we won’t have much time to prepare, but it’s the same for both teams. »
« It’s really great to score from a free-kick, especially early on in the match, it’s important when you’re playing against teams with five defenders. When I’m on the pitch, I give it my all to help the team. The coach makes his decisions, but as soon as he calls on me, I’ll be there. It’s up to me to work even harder and give my best. »
« The match against Chelsea was certainly a difficult one, but I’m happy today as we’ve picked up all three points. There’s still a long way to go this season and we need to keep working hard and improving. I feel very much at home in the team and I think I’ve settled in well over the course of last season. It’s never easy when you’re getting to know a new city and a new language, but I feel I can contribute even more to the team. »
Our Lyonnes are travelling to Île-de-France to face Paris SG, their long-standing rivals and current runners-up in the French league. Jonatan Giráldez’s side will be looking to secure victory in this crunch match on matchday 5 of the Arkema Première Ligue, on Saturday 17 October.
