Summary
The Lyonnes made a bright start. As early as the 9th minute, Lindsey Heaps won the ball inside the box before being pushed, but the referee waved play on.
Wolfsburg opened the scoring in the 14th minute. A shot from Lynn Beerensteyn took an unfortunate deflection off Damaris Egurrola, and gave the German side the lead (14’, 1–0).
Jonatan Giráldez’s players then looked to respond. In the 23rd minute, they earned a well-placed free kick and worked a clever three-player routine, but Ada Hegerberg couldn’t apply the finishing touch.
The Lyon side kept up the pressure and created another chance in the 32nd minute. From a superb cross by Selma Bacha, Ada Hegerberg headed the ball into the path of Melchie Dumornay, but the Haitian international was unable to convert.
After the break, OL Lyonnes came out with greater intent, immediately looking to break down the German defence. In the 52nd minute, Tabitha Chawinga made a perfect pass through the middle to Melchie Dumornay, but the Lyon forward saw her effort go just wide of the post.
A few minutes later, Lyon went agonisingly close to an equaliser. In the 58th minute, Kadidiatou Diani played Ada Hegerberg down the right flank, before the Norwegian squared it into the box. Well positioned, the French international struck it first time, only to see her shot crash off the post.
Looking to inject fresh energy, Jonatan Giráldez made a double substitution in the 61st minute, bringing on Korbin Shrader and Jule Brand in place of Lindsey Heaps and Kadidiatou Diani.
Later on, in the 71st minute, two more changes followed, with Damaris Egurrola and Ada Hegerberg making way for Lily Yohannes and Marie-Antoinette Katoto.
Despite a more proactive second-half display and several dangerous chances, Lyon were unable to find the equaliser and ultimately fell to defeat in this first leg. Everything will be on the line in the return leg on Thursday, April 2 at the Groupama Stadium!
