Arriving in 2006 from Martinique, Wendie Renard joined OL at the age of 16 and helped the club’s women’s team win its first French championship title in her first season in 2006/2007. Wendie Renard gradually established herself at Lyon before being named captain in 2013.
The French international has won all 31 titles in the club’s history, including 14 French Division 1 championships, 9 French Cups, 7 Women’s Champions Leagues, and 1 Champions Trophy. Individually, Wendie Renard is considered one of the best defenders in the world, as evidenced by her numerous personal accolades, including seven appearances in the FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11.
At 31 years old, the captain of the French national team made women’s soccer history by becoming the first player to reach the milestone of 100 matches in the Women’s Champions League on Sunday, April 24, at Groupama Stadium against Paris Saint Germain.
In contention to win an eighth European trophy with Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday in Turin, in 10 finals played, Wendie Renard has played 419 matches in all competitions with the club (261 in D1 Arkema, 101 in the Women’s Champions League, 56 in the Coupe de France, and 1 in the Trophée des Championnes) and has scored 136 goals.
OL and its captain are now tied together until 2026, symbolically twenty years after her arrival. The entire Olympique Lyonnais team is delighted with this extension, which further cements Wendie Renard’s place in football history and is the first step towards a more ambitious than ever OL Women’s team in 2022/23.
