Our Lyon women’s team traveled to Turin for a crucial match in the group stage. They initially struggled to find their rhythm against a clinical and incisive Juventus side. The Turin team opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Beccari capitalized on a poorly cleared ball to give Juve the lead (12′, 1-0).
Lyon responded quickly. In the 16th minute, Selma Bacha delivered a perfect cross to the far post for Lindsey Heaps. The American rose highest and headed powerfully against the crossbar – a golden opportunity that could have turned the game around.
In the 27th minute, Cambiaghi took advantage of a quick counter-attack to score Italy’s second goal (27′, 2-0). Towards the end of the first half, Juventus extended their lead once again. Pinto found the opening allowing the Italians to take a clear advantage at halftime (37’, 3-0).
Upon returning from the locker room, Jonatan Giráldez made two changes to inject some dynamism into the game. Tarciane and Lily Yohannes were replaced by Alice Sombath and Korbin Shrader. Our Lyon players began the second half eager to get back into the game quickly, and their efforts soon paid off. In the 60th minute, Ada Hegerberg played a magnificent through ball to Tabitha Chawinga. The Malawian drew the defense and finished with an unstoppable, angled shot to reduce the deficit (60′, 3-1). Two minutes later, Tabitha Chawinga and Ada Hegerberg were substituted by Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Jule Brand.
In the 79th minute, Selma Bacha delivered a pinpoint cross to Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who rose and powerfully headed the ball into the back of the net to bring Lyon back within one goal (79′, 3-2). In the dying minutes, Lyon snatched an equalizer from the penalty spot, converted by Wendie Renard. With remarkable composure, she scored the equalizer (90′, 3-3). Jule Brand thought she had given her team the lead in the final moments, but her goal was ultimately ruled offside.
Our Lyon women left Turin with a valuable point in the race for direct qualification and have provisionally taken the lead in the standings with 10 points.
In the other important match tonight, Manchester United faced Wolfsburg, against whom Lyon had defeated them in the previous round (3-1). This time, the German side dominated, winning 5-2. The English team thus drops to fourth place in the provisional standings.
The next European match for our Lyon women will take place on December 10th at Manchester United’s ground, where they will try to get back to winning ways in this competition. The team must now focus on Saturday’s home game against Strasbourg before the international break.
