Well into their second leg quarter-final, our Lyonnes quickly showed their intentions. In the 2nd minute, Jule Brand broke through the opposition defence and perfectly set up Korbin Shrader, whose attempt went over the bar. An early warning that set the tone for a proactive start to the match.
Dominant and well-organised, Jonatan Giráldez’s side were eventually rewarded in the 16th minute. Following a fine attacking move, Lily Yohannes opened the scoring with a superb angled finish, bringing OL Lyonnes level across the two legs. A crucial goal that rewarded their strong start (16′, 1-1).
Still pushing forward, our Lyonnes continued to apply pressure. In the 35th minute, Ashley Lawrence found Selma Bacha on the flank, before the Lyon full-back delivered a dangerous cross for Lindsey Heaps. The midfielder then tried her luck with a low strike that narrowly missed the post.
In the second half, the Lyonnes maintained their ambition by immediately putting pressure on the opposition goal. In the 56th minute, Selma Bacha came close to bringing the stadium to its feet with a superb volley from a corner, but her effort was tipped away at the last moment by the opposing goalkeeper.
Focused and disciplined, the Lyonnaises then showed defensive solidity at a key moment of the match. In the 78th minute, Christiane Endler produced a decisive save, winning her one-on-one duel with the German striker who had broken through on goal. A crucial intervention that helped OL Lyonnes preserve their advantage.
At the end of a largely controlled second half, our Lyonnes held firm until the final whistle which meant both teams had to go into extra time.
In the 93rd minute, Tabitha Chawinga delivered a good cross towards Vicki Becho, who threw herself at the ball but failed to keep her attempt on target. Three minutes later, the pair combined again, but once more the Lyon striker could not adjust her finish.
In the 98th minute, when Vicki Becho found Marie-Antoinette Katoto inside the box. The Lyon forward finished clinically, but the goal was ultimately ruled out offside.
In the 102nd minute, from a perfectly taken corner by Selma Bacha, Melchie Dumornay reacted quickest to poke the ball home, giving OL Lyonnes the lead on aggregate (102′, 2-1). A moment of huge joy, quickly followed by another blow for the opposition.
Just before the break in extra time, Selma Bacha once again made her mark from a corner, this time finding the head of Damaris Egurrola, who produced a superb finish to extend the advantage even further (105+2′, 3-1).
To definitively seal qualification, our Lyonnes added a final goal late on. In the 119th minute, Tabitha Chawinga, perfectly played through, used her pace to beat the goalkeeper and score the last goal of the match (119′, 4-1).
After extra time and a performance full of character, OL Lyonnes won with authority and booked their place for the semi-finals of the competition. Our Lyonnes will now face a familiar opponent, Arsenal.
