On Matchday 3 of the Women’s Champions League, OL Lyonnes faced Wolfsburg in a classic European encounter. From the opening minutes, the tone was set. Korbin Schrader rattled the crossbar with a powerful shot in the 4th minute, signaling the start of the match.
The attacks continued, and OL Lyonnes kept pressing. In the 18th minute, Korbin Schrader again tried her luck from distance, but her shot once more struck the bar! The pressure from Lyon was relentless, and the crowd sensed that the opening goal was imminent.
Wendie Renard then made her mark from a corner in the 22nd minute. Her powerful header forced the German goalkeeper into a reflex save with her fingertips. Moments later, their efforts finally paid off with a perfectly executed free kick from Lindsey Heaps. Her shot crashed against the crossbar before falling to Ada Hegerberg, who finished without hesitation (25′, 1-0).
OL Lyonnes didn’t stop there. Four minutes later, Selma Bacha delivered another cross from a set piece, and Ada Hegerberg, once again, doubled the lead with a header (29′, 2-0). The Lyon players went into the break with a well-deserved advantage, buoyed by remarkable efficiency.
Our Lyon players returned from the locker room with the same intensity and continued their dominance. Attacks intensified, and Jonatan Giráldez’s team continued to dictate the tempo against Wolfsburg. In the 64th minute, Korbin Schrader, omnipresent in midfield, perfectly released Jule Brand down the left flank. The German international delivered a first-time cross to Ada Hegerberg, whose close-range shot was saved by the opposing goalkeeper. Our players continued to press relentlessly. The reward came a few minutes later. In the 72nd minute, the referee awarded a penalty for an illegal shirt pull in the German penalty area. Wendie Renard stepped up and, with all her experience, confidently converted the penalty (72′, 3-0).
Wolfsburg managed to reduce the deficit in the 79th minute, capitalizing on a fortunate counter-attack and a defensive lapse by Lyon (79′, 3-1). Late in the game, Melchie Dumornay broke down the right flank and delivered an excellent cross to substitute Marie-Antoinette Katoto. The striker threw herself at the ball to head it, but her effort went just wide of the post.
Solid, inspired, and collectively superior, Lyon secured a valuable victory to maintain their position in the top four of the league standings.
A symbolic match for several of our players: Selma Bacha became the youngest player to reach 60 appearances in the Women’s Champions League. In addition to her performance that evening, our Lyon player also joined the top 15 most-capped players in OL history at just 25 years old. Further proof of her consistency, commitment, and importance to the Lyon squad. Lindsey Heaps celebrated her 100th match with OL Lyonnes, while Wendie Renard made even more history by becoming the first player to reach 100 wins in the competition.
