After one final and highly productive preseason game, the Lyonnes secured a 4 – 0 win over London City Lionesses.
From the opening minutes, the London side looked dangerous. In the 10th minute, Mala Grohs was called into action for the first time, producing a superb save from a London City free-kick. Just a minute later, the Lyon goalkeeper was called upon again, making an excellent reflex save to deny a London effort following a corner. But the Lyonnes responded quickly. Jonatan Giráldez’s side gradually took control of the game, increasing the tempo and putting more pressure on their opponents. The Lyonnes’ dominance finally paid off in the 38th minute. Following a poor clearance from Mary Earps, the ball fell to Marie-Antoinette Katoto. The forward then delivered a superb chipped pass to Caroline Weir, who made no mistake, calmly slotting home the opening goal of the game! In the 42nd minute, Caroline Weir completed her brace! With a perfectly executed direct corner, the Lyonne midfielder found the back of the net, giving the Lyonnes a two-goal lead just before half-time. A perfectly controlled first half from our Lyonnes!
The Lyonnes came back out for the second half with the same intensity and wasted no time extending their lead. In the 47th minute, Melchie Dumornay took advantage of some excellent pressing to win the ball back from the London defence. She beats Mary Earps with a superb dribble before calmly finishing into the empty net (3-0). Caroline Weir, who had already scored twice in the first half, came close to adding another goal to her tally in the 59th minute. However, her superb effort was denied by an excellent save from Mary Earps. The Lyonnes continued to push forward and were rewarded in the 63rd minute. Caroline Weir delivered a superb cross towards Melchie Dumornay, who made a perfectly timed run and finished brilliantly to complete her brace in the game (63’, 4-0). A second half that mirrored the first: intense, controlled and spectacular. The Lyonnes secured a convincing victory and win the first Mastercard Cup. They can now turn their attention to the start of the French league season, with their opening game coming next week against Fleury.
“Today’s performance was very good, beyond the scoreline itself. The team’s overall progress throughout pre-season has been very positive, with tactical improvements in every game. However, we still need to improve our starts to matches and our accuracy. Overall, the assessment is positive, despite the lack of available players over the past few weeks.”
“It’s the perfect way to finish with a great home win in front of our supporters. The team is on the right track heading into the start of the league season. Integrating the new players and getting to grips with the game plan takes a little time, but we were able to reflect on our last defeat and address the areas where we needed to improve. This final game perfectly reflects the level and intensity we want to maintain over 90 minutes, although there are still a few lapses in concentration that we need to eliminate.”
First game of the Arkema Première Ligue on Friday 4th September, with a first away game in Fleury. See you on Saturday 12th September at 1:30pm for our first game at Groupama Stadium, against Paris FC!
