OL Lyonnes once again put in a stellar performance at home, thrashing Marseille 5–0, and consolidated their position at the top of the table at the end of matchday 6 of the Arkema Première Ligue.
Our Lyonnes got off to a flying start, opening the scoring right from the kick-off. Melchie Dumornay played a perfect through ball to Jule Brand. The German winger broke down the left flank and crossed for Salma Paralluelo, who beat her marker to finish off this fine move (1–0, 4′). OL Lyonnes were in control of the game but were caught out by a counter-attack. Christiane Endler put an end to it with a fine save (14’). Our Lyonnes pressed the Marseille players and Tabitha Chawinga won the ball back from the opposing defender. Positioned on the edge of the box, she played the ball out to Melchie Dumornay, who slotted it perfectly into the bottom corner (2–0, 26’). Just four minutes later, Tabitha Chawinga once again demonstrated her tenacity by attempting to win the ball back from her opponent. The opposing defender committed a foul and Melchie Dumornay scored her second goal of the match by converting the penalty (3–0, 31’). Shortly before half-time, a Marseille player handled the ball and it was Ada Hegerberg’s turn to extend the lead from the penalty spot (4–0, 40′).
After the break, our Lyonnes regained control of the game but were caught out by a counter-attack led by the Marseille forwards. Melchie Dumornay tracked back well and, with a tackle, cleared the danger by sending the ball out for a corner (56′). Shortly after the hour mark, OL Lyonnes distinguished themselves once again with a fine piece of team play. Vicki Becho broke down the right wing and crossed to the far post, finding Liana Joseph, who jumped higher than her opponent and headed the ball into the back of the net. The goal was ultimately disallowed due to a foul by the French striker during the challenge (68’). Jonatan Giráldez’s players eventually found the net again a few minutes later. Tarciane crossed into the box; Liana Joseph let the ball run through to the well-positioned Ada Hegerberg. The latter beat the opposing goalkeeper with a crisp shot that nestled into the far top corner (5–0, 71′). The Norwegian striker came particularly close to scoring a hat-trick from another cross by Tarciane (86′). A final shot from Inès Benyahia grazed the crossbar (90+2’) to round off another resounding victory for OL Lyonnes. Thanks to their respective braces, Melchie Dumornay and Ada Hegerberg now occupy first and second place in the league’s top scorers’ table.
« We had a very good first half, but we weren’t able to maintain that control in the second half. Today, we created fewer chances through open play, but more through quick, direct attacks. That’s possible given the players we have, but I prefer it when we try to link up. As I’ve often said, it’s all very well to attack strongly in the first half, but we need to maintain that intensity throughout the match. »
« C’était un match intense, avec beaucoup de duels, et nous avons répondu présentes. J’aime la manière dont nous jouons, je pense que les équipes adverses ont beaucoup de mal à défendre contre nous. Je suis bien évidemment contente de jouer dans une équipe qui se projette beaucoup. Nous avons un style de jeu offensif et j’aime toujours autant marquer. »
OL Lyonnes will host Inter Milan at the Groupama Stadium on Wednesday 28 November. This European clash forms part of Matchday 3 of the Women’s Champions League. Lyonnes are counting on your support!
