OL Lyonnes made a lasting impression with a commanding victory away at the Parc des Princes. A fine 4-0 win over Paris SG bodes well following the international break and ahead of two crucial matches at the Groupama Stadium, against Marseille and Inter Milan.
This classic match lived up to expectations right from the kick-off! The opening goal came as early as the 3rd minute, with OL Lyonnes taking the lead from a cross by Selma Bacha that found the head of the ever-present Melchie Dumornay (0-1). Sakina Karchaoui tried a shot that was deflected by Wassa Sangare (34′). OL Lyonnes struggled in one-on-one duels during this period of Parisian dominance. But Jonatan Giráldez’s side kept up the pressure in the Parisian half. On the counter-attack, Salma Paralluelo saw her shot saved by a very alert Katarzyna Kiedrzynek, then Marie-Antoinette Katoto missed the target (37’). She wouldn’t miss twice: Wendie Renard set the move up brilliantly, a one-two between Jule Brand and Vicki Becho, and the German international delivered a perfect cross to the French striker for an unstoppable header. OL Lyonnes doubled their lead just before half-time (0-2, 39’)!
Lyon drove the point home, just as they had done early in the match, very early in the second half. Melchie Dumornay worked tirelessly to hold off the Parisian defensive onslaught. She played the ball to Salma Paralluelo, who found Vicki Becho. The Frenchwoman’s shot was deflected by a Parisian player and flew into the net (0-3, 48′). Thereafter, Lyon’s pressing showed no sign of letting up and OL Lyonnes maintained the same high standards. Having provided the decisive pass, Salma Paralluelo went on to score herself. From a free-kick, Selma Bacha picked out Wendie Renard. The captain headed the ball across the Paris goalmouth. Behind the defence, the Spanish international slotted the ball into the back of the net (0-4, 59′). The chances came thick and fast, confirming Lyon’s dominance. The match ended with a clear 0-4 scoreline. A masterfully controlled encounter, with goals reflecting Lyon’s fine collective build-up play.
« I’m very pleased. We played a very good match; the team performed well. We deserved the win. We certainly have a lot of strength from set pieces, but overall, the team’s performance was of a very high standard tonight. Every week, every match is important. We must celebrate this victory tonight, because Paris SG are a tough opponent. But we still have a long way to go. We’re only at the start of the season. We need to maintain this standard of play. »
« We wanted to put in a strong performance tonight. It’s never easy after an international break. We controlled the match by playing with a lot of aggression. We’ve been with the coach for another year now, and the team’s chemistry with the new players is good. We’re working to make this season better than the last. We need to stay humble and keep working hard, because nothing in life is guaranteed. It’s important to keep our feet on the ground. We’re trying to improve day by day and give our best in every match. »
« It was important for us to put in a good performance. We know that coming here is never easy. We wanted to show that we’re players with character. We scored early on, which got the whole team into the swing of things. We built up good momentum from there, maintained good possession, managed to make them run and played with real freedom on the ball. »
